The core search functionality is great, reliable and fast. Their additional value add functions are good, but most are not worth the additional costs. Admin and integration is difficult (M2) and does require technical dev/sys admin.
Their cost structure and quoting are smoke and mirrors and increasing rapidly. They are making it difficult to understand, predict, manage and rolling out increasingly hostile overages. The end goal appears to allow themselves the first glance view of being competitively priced to get you contracted in, then hit you with overage charges. They know that switching between suppliers is costly - thus most customers wont.
Great for controlling complex searches for fashion, allowing us to control results for things like newness, stock levels, discounts etc. We also use their preview search to great effect allowing people to adjust their searches on the fly using the visual feed back of the garments. We also inject promotional content into search eg: Search Socks and the "Socks Multibuy" banner comes up in results.
Algolia is pretty simple to set up as no work is required from our end and it provides some pretty good search terms. In almost all cases, very little modification is required in Algolia to work with the quest and output monitor. It has great functions and handles incorrect requests, which are the major reasons we have selected this service instead of using another one.
A greater degree of personalization is necessary in Algolia. When it comes to pricing, this is a very costly option in comparison to other tools. I know company plans are always evolving, but my project nearly doubled overnight in cost. Instead of independently evaluating every factor, the rating is limited to priority factors. Also, Algolia does not support iOS or Android.
All of our search features can be found through Algolia on our app or toolbar across the web. Algolia helped us to give our customers only the answers they searched for in a few nanoseconds as the search rate was a glaring problem and is one of the main weaknesses on our website. Algolia is also used for our quest for auto feedback and feedback.
Performance! It's where Algolia shines, they can deliver p99 < 10ms response times, the search experience feels instant, making a huge difference for our customers. They have many available SDKs for all sorts of clients which makes it very easy to integrate with web and mobile apps. Another great feature is the geo-replication where you can deploy your data to more datacenters and make the search faster all over the world, be aware that this cost extra though.
Pricing. For an early stage and growing startup it can be challenging to pay their price. We have to constantly purge old records and optimize our systems to decrease the number of operations which causes some extra development overhead for us.
We're using Algolia to power all of our search: from sports events calendar to digital asset management. With Algolia our customers can have a centralized view of their assets and it becomes searchable instantly, streamlining their content distribution.
Overal it's a very modern feeling service. Great documentation including good examples. I was up and running in about an hour, including integrating it with a static site build process and a basic front end.
So far there's nothing to dislike. I'm not sure how well the pricing scales for production but for my limited traffic site it's perfect.
I needed a search service that I could use with a static jamstack site with no access to a database. Algol is filled that need perfectly, and at no cost for my small use case.
It's easy to use and plenty of SDKs are provided so there's is one for everyone. Setup and configuration are done through a clear dashboard which also offers great insights into search performance. Search results are being delivered instantaneously. They're so fast that using a search index for search query completion is working perfectly. The pricing is very reasonable. For testing and small volume sites, there is even a free tier. Support also is great. The turnaround for a fix in one of the provided SDKs was less than 24h.
There is nothing that I truly dislike about algolia.
It's saving us the effort to build our own search infrastructure. We have no relevant skills available in-house, so having such a service offered at a reasonable cost is helping is to get our products to the market a lot faster.
I'm impressed with Algolia's search speed when entering product information. We have several thousand products and the search engine responds almost simultaneously as our customers type characters.
The cost is a little high. The pricing tiers are nice but the thresholds are set too low. Currently, our website is for niche products. I could see it getting quite expensive on more popular websites.
Our customers can find what they're looking for easily and quickly. I think a responsive website translates to a higher level of professionalism and ultimately trust in our products. Showing the product image and displaying the price also improves our customers experience. One of the intangible benefits from this is it reduces calls to our customer service. Finally, it's helpful to know which products our customers search for the most. We pay close attention to what our users look for so that we can focus on those products specifically. In many cases where a customer didn't purchase our product after searching, we found that the image or text on the product was confusing or incomplete. We have had several instances where, after improving the product description or image, sales on their product increased.
Algolia is incredibly fast to execute searches, often results return in just a few milliseconds. Setup was quite easy, even given the technical overhead involved, since the API and docs are clear and to the point. It has out of the box compatibility with VueJS which I love, so that is appreciated. The default widgets provided are easy to customize and it's not too hard to make your own when needed. There are plugins for Wordpress and other CMSs for those that use them. I'd also counterpoint to anyone who mentions price as a negative. I would challenge anyone to show me they can even setup the raw infrastructure needed to run something like elastic search this fast, never mind the ongoing costs needed to maintain such a system. Algolia can't be beat from a value standpoint right now in this space.
The lack of date based filter widget maybe? I have no serious complaint against the product. Algolia has served all the needs I had for search.
We are a small team and deploying real-time faceted search on complex sites is very difficult. Then to do is reliably with cross-platform compatibility and great speed, that's nearly impossible. Algolia makes this process trivial by comparison, with a few custom plugins we are able to setup user friendly search on all of our sites easily.
Very easy to set up, no maintenance needed from our side. Efficient and easy to adapt a ranking formula. Extremely fast search results. We tried to implement on iconscout.com. Here is a sample link: https://iconscout-search.netlify.app Algolia is brain-dead simple to set up. I've implemented a search with Algolia in a dozen different ways now, and it never took me longer than a few minutes to get the functionality I want. With Algolia, the only challenge is designing your search UI -- if you don't want to use they are baked in UI solutions.
Costs can escalate dramatically when you expand your traffic. Manually manipulating search results (for specific queries having listings show up first) is a bit difficult to do without custom developing that functionality.
Any consumer-facing business that needs instant search results for user searches. Excellent fits would be e-commerce solutions and marketplaces. If your traffic is low it is also a relatively cost-effective solution than using your own solution (e.g. elastic search). Perfect for teams that do not have the architectural knowledge to set up their own search solutions.
